Javier Bardem’s ghost pirates stars in first teaser for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales’

Disney dropped the first teaser for next summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, offering up few details, but a first look at the villain, Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.

While Johnny Depp is set to reprise his role as the notorious Jack Sparrow, the franchise will twist and turn with casting and creative changes. While Geoffrey Rush returns as Barbossa, Orlando Bloom will bring Will Turner back, after missing the last adventure. Joining Bardem is Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelario, with the film seeing Sparrow on the hunt for the Trident of Poseidon, which gives its holder power over the seas.

Keith Richards will also appear as Jack’s father, joined by another music legend, Paul McCartney, who has an unknown role in the film.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg directed from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with composer Geoff Zanelli taking over from series stalwart Hans Zimmer.

The production has been marred with delays and incidents, such as thecast experiencing extreme sea sickness, Depp’s legal dispute with the Australian government over allegedly smuggling his Yorkshire terriers, and quarantine delays over the monkeys that portray Jack the monkey.

Depp was injured on set and had to be flown back to the United States for surgery. This suspended filming for two weeks.

By May 2015, nearly four months before filming came to an end, the film was reportedly already $70 million over its $250 million budget.

Pirates has always been a box office success for Depp, who is enduring several big flops, including Lone Ranger.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales arrives in theaters May 26, 2017.
