‘How to Train Your Dragon 3’ is now set for 2019

Two years after DreamWorks released How to Train Your Dragon 2 the studio has announced that another sequel will indeed arrive in theaters, now in 2019.

A press release from Universal announced How to Train Your Dragon 3 is scheduled for theaters on Friday, March 1, 2019 — a week before Marvel’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson arrives on March 8th.

The Train Your Dragon franchise had been pretty lucrative, even spawning a spin-off series for Netflix and churning out solid toy sales figures, but the sequel plans continue to be pushed back, first to 2017 and then 2018.

Director Dean Delois is returning to direct with members of the original voice cast, telling Collider in a previous interview that the third film will be a “culmination of Hiccup’s coming of age.”

The official syopsis states: As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away.  When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.

The biggest issue with the scheduling has been the restructuring of DreamWorks and the three-films-a-year plan, which DWA chief Jeffrey Katzenberg said in 2015 was far too ambitious of an undertaking.

Dragon 2 only earned $177 million at the box office, down from $217 million for the original. Globally the second film raked in over $620 million, so a third (or even a fourth film) seemed certain.

The voice cast includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jonah Hill. Cate Blanchett and Djimon Hounsou will also reprise their roles as Valka and Drago respectively from the second film.
