Anti-Defamation League should apologize for attack on Trump and stop being the ‘Word Police’
The Anti-Defamation League is criticizing President-elect Trump for referencing Nazi Germany to make a political point. The comparisons alluded to collusion between the intelligence agencies and Trump’s political enemies – a perfectly accurate analogy IF IT IS TRUE!
“The president-elect’s use of Nazi Germany to make a political analogy is not only an inappropriate comparison on the merits, but it also coarsens our discourse and diminishes the horror of the Holocaust,” ADL CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt said Wednesday in a statement.
“There are legitimate questions on all sides regarding foreign influence in the 2016 presidential race. But the United States has democratic elections, a free press, rule of law and a civil service — including our intelligence agencies — that is deeply loyal to the U.S. Constitution. These facts invalidate any analogies between America and totalitarian societies.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump called press reports that the Russians have damaging information on him a “total fabrication.” He tweeted: “Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to ‘leak’ into the public. One last shot at me. Are we living in Nazi Germany?”
In a mid-day press conference, Trump defended his analogy by saying intelligence officials releasing classified information to the media is something the Nazis would have done.
The ADL said such a reference was “offensive” and a “trivialization of the Holocaust,” while calling on Trump to further explain the intentions behind his remark or apologize for misspeaking.
While the use of Nazi and Hitler is often inappropriate, here Donald Trump’s point is not only valid, worthy of examination. Where has the ADF been since the election with all of the attacks on Trump?
Doesn’t the TIME Magazine cover make an “inappropriate comparison” to Hitler? Does this “coarsen our discourse”?
How dare the ADF pretend they are the sole gatekeepers of Holocaust language? Just as the politically correct language has been over abused and extended into “inappropriate comparisons” the ADF’s demands here are equally wrong.
